Networking Tips
- Be Prepared - Make sure you have your business cards which are up to date, well presented and professional, in an easily accessible place.
- Research and be fully aware of what you want to achieve by networking.
- Dress to impress
- Networking is about being genuine and authentic – building relationships and seeing how you can help others through your business.
- Always be yourself - Be relaxed at networking events, talk easily, and enjoy yourself and the conversation. People will remember that.
- Network with confidence.
- Stand out from the crowd – This doesn’t mean become the centre of attention by standing on a table or saying something outrageous. Just ensure you act confident and capable without giving the impression you are overbearing.
- Have a clear understanding of what your business does and why, for whom and what makes your business special or different from others doing the same thing.
- Smile - People are more likely to warm up to someone who introduces themselves with smile.
- Pay attention - If you are involved in a group conversation pay attention to everyone, you never know when something relevant to you will be mentioned. Similarly, allow others the chance to talk. Remember not everyone loves the sound of your voice.
- Be specific – Talk briefly but effectively and don’t bore people.
- Work the room - Set yourself goals, such as making three good network contacts at an event.
- Always follow up on business cards, referrals and suggestions – people who network best are the ones who pay attention to detail. Simply collecting business cards isn’t enough!
- Call those you meet who may benefit from what you do and vice versa – Express that you enjoyed meeting them and arrange a meeting to share ideas and exchange business.
